About The Position

We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Horticultural Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for plants and a strong understanding of horticulture practices. This role involves working in various environments, including greenhouses and outdoor landscapes, to ensure the health and growth of plants. The Horticultural Assistant will play a vital role in maintaining our gardens, landscapes, and agricultural projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Significant experience in greenhouse operations and/or maintenance
  • Background in the green industry
  • Experience in large-scale watering
  • Good plant skills
  • Willingness to interact with students, faculty, staff, and members of the public
  • Physical fitness
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent

Nice To Haves

  • Organic food production a plus.
  • Minimum of one-year work experience in a greenhouse environment or working with plants is preferred
  • General knowledge of plants is preferred
  • Education in horticulture is preferred
  • Familiarity with Microsoft programs, e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, Access is preferred
  • Familiarity with greenhouse operations from a growing perspective

Responsibilities

  • Daily watering (fertilization)
  • Restocking/maintaining plant collections
  • Creating/maintaining plant displays
  • Troubleshooting/miscellaneous tasks
  • Planting
  • Plant Maintenance - trimming, weeding, scouting for bugs, etc.
  • Able to comfortably work in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions.
  • Prepare and assist with classroom lab setup as directed by faculty and staff.
  • Perform cultural care practices for crops, including planting, pruning, watering, fertilizing, and monitoring for pests and diseases to ensure healthy plant growth.
  • Support community outreach, events, volunteer recruitment, and tours
  • Assist with harvesting of produce from the sustainable urban agriculture farm and greenhouse
  • Support Horticulture Club activities and departmental community service activities to foster student engagement and community outreach.
  • Provide support to the Greenhouse Manager and Program Chair as needed contributing to the successful operations of the horticulture program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Learn, understand, and demonstrate the ability to safely operate and maintain tools and equipment used in daily work.
