About The Position

The Horticultural Attendant (Lawn Care) position involves performing labor to maintain grounds, operating hand and power equipment, and possessing some knowledge of plant identification and chemical application. Responsibilities include pruning, equipment maintenance, raking, litter pickup, and working in adverse weather conditions, including overtime and weekend work. The job focuses primarily on maintenance related to ornamental plants, but duties may change based on departmental needs.

Requirements

• One year of experience or training in farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping.
• Six semester hours in a plant science or landscape field of study.

Responsibilities

• Operate power riding mower (25HP or less), trimmer, edger, blower, hedger, etc. to maintain grounds, sidewalks, plazas, building entrances, canals, building perimeters, road sides, etc.
• Support arboriculture service with labor to chip limbs, haul debris, perform light chain saw work, pruning, chemical spraying, etc.
• Apply chemicals to control weeds, control pests, fertilize and amend soils, apply mulch to beds and under tree canopies, perform weed removal, assist with ornamental and flower planting, litter removal, and litter container servicing.
• Maintain interior plants including watering, pruning, fertilizing, relocation, rotating, cleaning, and treatment for disease and insects.
• Assist with irrigation work, digging, grading, drain basin cleaning, and concrete repair labor as needed.
• Perform inspections on mobile equipment and vehicles, change blades and tires as necessary on mowers, and keep some records.
• Assist with preventative maintenance as required.
• Work special events (athletic, fraternity, public, etc.) to assist with litter control and related cleanup.
• Perform related work as assigned.
