The Housing Advocate is responsible for arranging supportive services for homeless individuals and families who are living in emergency shelters and transitional housing in the Decatur area. Under the direction of the Homeward Bound Client Services Coordinator, the Housing Advocate implements a system for delivery of services to clients in a manner that uses existing resources and that leads to self-sufficiency and permanent housing for clients. Examples of such services include housing, job training, employment, education, budget management, bankruptcy, legal matters, DCFS, personal counseling, independent living skills, health care, parenting skills, and substance abuse treatment. The role involves completing initial assessments of individuals and families, providing case management and supportive services, and assisting in developing individualized case plans. The Housing Advocate will enter data in a computerized system for tracking progress of clients as they move toward self-sufficiency. Collaboration with other service providers such as DCFS and DHA is essential to develop and implement expedited housing plans. The advocate will document services provided according to program standards and arrange for services for clients through the Illinois Department of Human Services. Additionally, the Housing Advocate will assist clients with housing searches, conduct weekly home visits and office appointments, and meet with clients individually to review progress toward goals and revise plans as appropriate. Completing documentation such as case notes, accompanying clients to court, and performing administrative requirements are also key responsibilities.
