About The Position

Home health aides are unlicensed, non-professional workers who are supervised by health personnel. The home health aide is a member of the home health services team working under the guidance and supervision of an RN responsible for assessing needs of the residents as well as working with other members of the team. The home health aides duties may be adjusted at the discretion of the supervising nurse based on the evaluation of the patient’s needs and the ability of the home health aide to perform such tasks. The home health aide is expected to continue developing his/her skills and abilities in the function he/she performs.

Requirements

  • MUST be certified as a HHA and have worked within the past 2 years to be considered.
  • The home health aide must successfully complete an approved training course to carry out assigned activities or have documented evidence of completion of an equivalency exam approved by NYSDOH.
  • Be 18 years of age, show maturity, emotional and mental stability.
  • Shall be able to speak, read and write English and speak the predominate language of residents.
  • Understand and carry out directions and instructions, record messages and keep simple records.
  • Sympathetic attitude towards providing services for residents.
  • Have a good physical health as indicated by documentation in the personnel file.
  • Participate in 12 hours of in-service education per year as required by NYS regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Give personal care to include the following: Assist with showering; Comb hair/shampoo; Denture, mouth/care; Bed making – unoccupied; Help with dressing (i.e. upper and lower extremities, shoes and socks, etc.) Applying/removing TED stockings
  • Give special care assigned by RN or registered therapist - TPR; Help with exercises that have been demonstrated; Help with the use of appliances, i.e., wheelchair, walker, crutches, hearing aides as demonstrated; ASSIST ONLY with medications and record on MORs; Instillation of simple, routine eyedrops; Observe and record diabetic resident’s self-administration of blood sugars and insulin; Cue and remind the resident for meals, activities, toileting, and as needed.
  • Light housekeeping duties to maintain a healthful, safe environment including the following: Laundry for resident and bed linen changes as assigned; Clean refrigerator and food inspections as assigned; Pick up trash/waste as assigned; Clean resident equipment as assigned.
  • Promotes the resident’s mental alertness through conversation, reading, games and other activities.
  • Reports any changes in resident’s mental or physical condition to the nurse responsible for the care of the resident.
  • Gives simple emotional and psychological support to the resident as needed.
  • Records completion of assigned duties accurately in the resident’s personal care logs.
  • Performs duties according to the highest ethical and moral standards and in adherence with the facility’s corporate compliance plan and all applicable governing laws.
  • Adheres to the facility’s confidentiality statement in accessing and safeguarding protected health information (PHI) of residents and employees, as necessary to perform job duties.
  • Performs any other duties assigned by the LPN, RN, or Vice President of Assisted Living Services.
