Purpose Under the general direction of the Casting Supervisor, the Holding Operator is responsible for the safe operation of all Holding Furnaces, while providing a quality product to fulfill the customer’s demands. NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION Perform a variety of routine duties to operate and charge continuous casting equipment, with prescribed mix of molten metal, ingot and scrap to obtain a specified alloy. Must be able to operate melting and holding furnaces to maintain a specified flow of molten metal to the casting operations following prescribed methods and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to acquire basic computer skills to enter and extract information from computer. Ability to use measuring equipment such as micrometer and tape.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret graphic representations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Working knowledge of problem solving skills and ability to apply them in a reasonable manner.

Responsibilities

  • Follow plant safety rules and environmental policies, and attend required meetings. Report unsafe acts, unsafe conditions and environmental hazards to supervisor.
  • Relieve the caster operator for breaks and lunch.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Set up and operate equipment as required and enter data into PCS (computer system).
  • Clean, repair and inspect the furnaces as required.
  • Monitor and detect faulty operations of equipment and defective material and initiate corrective action requests. Refer questionable cases to supervisor.
  • Maintain work area, machine tools, and equipment in a clean, organized manner.
  • Follow standard quality and performance requirements.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
