About The Position

The mission of the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center is to study the roles of foods, food factors, agriculture practices and physical activity on human health, obesity prevention, and maintenance of healthy body weight. The Center is one of six Human Nutrition Research Centers operated by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). As a group, they form the USDA-Agriculture Research Service National Program in Human Nutrition. The Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Technician provides support services for human studies conducted by the Human Nutrition Research Center in Grand Forks, ND; responsible for performing phlebotomy procedures; will be trained on a wide range of clinical laboratory procedures including clinical chemistry, hematology, and urinalysis. With a reasonable amount of training and experience, the Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Technician will work independently to complete all types of human biological fluid sample processing. This position reports to the Human Nutrition Research Center Operations Manager and is provided with work direction by the GFHNRC Human Studies Director. The hours for this position can vary between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm Monday through Friday and occasional weekend and evening hours; local travel per human study needs. This is a part time position with hours that range from 0-20 hours per week based upon the needs of the Center. This position is contract funded; continuation is contingent on the ongoing availability of external funding.

Nice To Haves

Valid phlebotomy certification such as the National Healthcare Association (NHA) certification for Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).

Responsibilities

Provide phlebotomy support for human studies at the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center
Support human studies that are under responsibility of the Principal Investigators.
Participate in Center teams to accomplish the Center mission and resolve issues.
Collect, process and manage short- and long-term storage of samples of blood and other fluids from participants using strict adherence to established procedures and test requisitions.
Possess the knowledge and skill to perform routine phlebotomy in adult participants.
Collaborate with Center staff to align and share best practices.
Follow standard operating procedures and ensure laboratory safety and quality requirements are met.
Recognize safety hazards and comply with all safety practices and protocols.
Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations using various analyzers and/or manual methods on specimen sources such as blood, urine, and other body fluids using established procedures.
Demonstrate skill in use of equipment relevant to position.
Perform established quality assurance procedures (quality control testing, instrument function checks and calibrations) and maintain appropriate documentation and report irregularities.
Assess accuracy and validity of obtained test results by applying knowledge of relevant scientific principles and identify probable causes for irregular and atypical findings.
Monitor and evaluate quality control data reporting outliers to the Principal Investigator, Core Lab Director and Nurse Coordinator.
Maintain records of tests, examinations, and final results.
Follow standard operating procedures and ensure laboratory safety and quality requirements are met.
Recognize safety hazards and comply with all safety practices and protocols.
Maintain confidentiality of all research study participants.
Present a professional image, especially when dealing with participants and stakeholders.

Submit timely leave requests to supervisor using online UND system. Notify supervisor and Federal work director of absences (email preferred).

Responsible for any work-issued keys, badges, and equipment.
Know and follow UND policies and procedures.
Know and follow Federal policies and procedures as they pertain to UND employees at the HNRC.
