About The Position

The Hearst Newspapers (HNP) DevHub is hiring an Editorial AI Development Intern for the summer season who is passionate about local news, journalism and service to our communities. In this role, you’ll contribute hands-on engineering support to extend and strengthen our growing suite of editorial AI services and newsroom tools. The HNP DevHub is a team of engineers, developers, designers, project managers and content strategists who collaborate with local newsrooms to create best-in-class digital experiences. Requirements

  • Experience using Python to build or extend APIs and interact with remote services.
  • Familiarity with prompt design, evaluation workflows or AI product prototyping.
  • Understanding of RESTful services, JSON, and basic web architecture.
  • Working knowledge of Git and Github.
  • Experience in a modern newsroom (including student publications) or a related work environment.
  • Ability to self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines.
  • Comfort with Slack, Zoom and Google Sheets.

Nice To Haves

  • AI-integrated IDEs (Github Copilot, Cursor).
  • AWS systems such as S3, EC2, Lambda.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on engineering support for our editorial AI initiatives.
  • Extending and hardening existing editorial AI services and APIs.
  • Prototyping newsroom-facing AI workflows (e.g., Slack-based alerts, utilities and reporting tools).
  • Contributing to internal tooling that makes our development processes more repeatable and scalable.
  • Writing clear internal documentation to support adoption and maintainability.
  • Supporting experimentation and evaluation of AI-driven newsroom utilities.
  • Collaborate with team members on data-driven AI projects.
  • Learn how to create digital tools and experiences to make communities stronger and readers’ lives easier.
