About the position

We're looking for a passionate, knowledgeable, and empathetic Peer Support Specialist to join our Infectious Diseases team. In this role, you won't just offer support-you'll inspire confidence, share knowledge, and help others living with HIV thrive. You'll be the bridge between medical care and everyday life, empowering clients to take control of their health journey.

Responsibilities

  • Share your lived experience with HIV to educate and uplift others-teaching the basics of HIV/AIDS, how to reduce transmission, and how HIV medications work.
  • Be a go-to guide, connecting clients with vital HIV services offered at our organization and throughout the Kansas City area.
  • Help new clients overcome fears and myths about treatment, especially when starting HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy).
  • Collaborate with clients to develop practical, personalized plans to overcome barriers and successfully stick with their treatment routines.
  • Stay in touch with clients through phone calls, appointments, and check-ins at the Infectious Diseases clinic.
  • Keep clinic staff informed when clients request support or when you notice something that needs attention.
  • Maintain thorough, timely documentation of all client interactions and activities, following the requirements of the Healthy Start Program.
  • Support quality improvement efforts and promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all.
  • Provide age-appropriate services, tailored to meet each client's physical, emotional, educational, and safety needs.
  • Represent the clinic with professionalism and kindness in every interaction-with patients, families, staff, and the broader community.
  • Stay informed about regulations, policies, and best practices to ensure compliance and top-notch service delivery.

Requirements

  • You must be diagnosed with HIV and have been actively receiving HIV care for at least 12 months.
