About The Position

Under direct supervision, the Histotechnologist 1 (HTL1) is responsible for tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining and equipment maintenance of received samples. The histotechnologist performs a variety of routine and specialized techniques and procedures. Enhances the efficiency and accuracy of lab testing by maintaining adequate laboratory supplies, by keeping equipment in operational condition and by maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory work area. Assists in the preparation of monthly statistical reports by keeping accurate records on all laboratory procedures performed.

Requirements

  • BS degree in science or successful completion of a histology training program/rotation.
  • Certified HTL or provisional license.
  • Must be competent in all facets of histology including processing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining and special stains.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results within established deadlines.
  • Logical thinker and good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated
  • Able to coordinate and establish priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Process, embed, and section tissues.
  • Perform routine, special stain and immunohistochemistry process.
  • Perform daily preventive maintenance of all the equipment in your care area.
  • File tissue blocks.
  • Operate instruments within established guidelines.
  • Perform appropriate troubleshooting to ensure adequate operations.
  • Properly store and dispose chemical and biohazard material.
  • Prepare tissue samples using correct procedures for preservation: processing, embedding, and cooling as appropriate per procedure.
  • Section tissue samples using good microtomy techniques on various microtomes and cryostats to produce acceptable quality slides for staining according to procedures.
  • Adequately use recycler to maximize output of recycled xylene and alcohol.
  • Prioritize and manage workload to meet expected Turn-Around-Times (TATs).
  • Maintain competence and add new skills as technology changes.
  • Work output exceeds average output without sacrificing quality.
  • Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of specimens.
  • Ability to complete work tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Correctly record QC logs.
  • Prepare, label and store chemical and stain stock solutions accurately according to procedures and needs.
  • Accurately perform special stains and record Quality Control (QC) results.
  • Evaluate routine and special stain quality for acceptability and results are communicated to the Supervisor prior to release to the ordering pathologist.
  • Perform any other task that is necessary to keep the workflow of the area.
  • Inform supervisor of inventory changes.
  • Implement the SOP protocols daily.
  • Follow health and safety regulations.
  • Always wear personal protective equipment.
  • Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner with minimal supervision.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the direct supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager.
  • Interpret policy and established methods and procedures.
  • Follow departmental safety rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Respond to changes in work schedule as necessary or as requested.
  • Establish a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with co-workers.
  • Maintain a clean and organized area.
