Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or graduate of an accredited histotechnology program.
  • ASCP certification as a histologic technician (HTL).
  • Functioning knowledge of anatomy, chemistry, physiology.
  • Experience in enzymes histochemistry and immunoperoxidase stains.
  • Ability to perform accurate, reliable and high level work quickly and under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and the ability to work with delicate instruments and automated equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and accessions tissue and prepares specimens for histologic processing.
  • Performs necessary logging routines and checks each specimen for criteria of acceptability.
  • Prepares sections of tissue for immediate examination using rapid tissue processing and frozen section techniques.
  • Prepares slides of specimens to enhance visibility under the microscope.
  • Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate tissue specimens.
  • Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides.
  • Performs routine and special stains according to department procedures.
  • Examines slides under the microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures.
  • Maintains equipment, instruments, and cleanliness of work area.
  • Performs special techniques such as enzyme histochemistry and immunohistochemistry.
  • Performs instrument maintenance using established protocols.
  • Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, local and company policies and procedures.
