The Histotechnician at LAB prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures to aid in patient diagnosis. This involves processing, embedding, cutting, and staining surgical, biopsy, and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopic slide review. The role also includes performing complex histological procedures, analyzing and correcting problems using scientific principles, analyzing and recording data, and performing instrument maintenance according to established protocols. The Histotechnician works within defined technical processes and procedures, may help determine approaches for new assignments, and operates with a limited degree of supervision, with oversight primarily on complex new assignments. They also serve as an informal resource for less experienced colleagues.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) through ASCP is required within 6 months of hire date.
  • Required skills include but are not limited to; Embedding, Cutting, routine H&E staining, Special stains.
  • Requires proficiency at computer entry/retrieval of lab results.
  • Requires ability to maintain quality control records and patient results.
  • Requires ability to apply safety regulations.
  • Requires ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's Degree in Histology is preferred.
  • Additional experience/education will be considered in lieu of certification.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures that aid in the confirmation of patient diagnosis.
  • Processes, embeds, cuts and stains surgical, biopsy and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopic slide review.
  • Performs complex histological procedures and analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.
  • Analyzes and records data.
  • Performs instrument maintenance, utilizing established protocols.
  • Works within defined technical processes and procedures or methodologies and may help determine the appropriate approach for new assignments.
  • Acts as an informal resource for colleagues with less experience.
