About The Position

The Histotechnician I position is responsible for performing all aspects of histotechnology, including cutting, staining, and imaging sections of tissue samples. This role is essential in the laboratory operations, ensuring that histology tasks are completed accurately and efficiently. The technician will work with both fresh/frozen tissue preserved in RNA Retain and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue, manually or automatically staining sections for H&E imaging. The technician will also load H&E slides on ScanScope for imaging and scoring by pathologists. Maintaining laboratory logs and ensuring timely completion of samples are critical components of this role, along with performing various maintenance and housekeeping tasks to keep the laboratory clean and functional. The technician will report any discrepancies or equipment malfunctions to the Director of Laboratory Operations and may also be involved in data entry tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of general laboratory techniques.
  • Basic understanding of workflow for Anatomic Pathology (AP).
  • Demonstrated initiative, balanced assertiveness, and team orientation.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Basic skills in microtomy and tissue embedding, with the ability to perform these efficiently.
  • Ability to handle biological samples and potentially hazardous chemicals.
  • Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment to execute test procedures successfully.
  • Computer skills and knowledge of laboratory automation.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform histology aspects of the lab, including cutting fresh/frozen tissue and staining sections for H&E imaging.
  • Load H&E slides on ScanScope for imaging and scoring by pathologists.
  • Maintain laboratory logs to ensure current information is complete and readily available.
  • Ensure timely completion of samples and report discrepancies to the Director of Laboratory Operations.
  • Perform maintenance and housekeeping tasks to keep the laboratory clean and functional.
  • Clean and fill water baths, bulk reagents, and dump waste containers.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the Director of Laboratory Operations.
  • Wash laboratory dishes to ensure a clean supply when needed.
  • Perform data entry tasks in the laboratory and office when needed.
