About The Position

UPMC is seeking a dedicated Histotechnician or Histotechnologist to join our dynamic Histology Lab team. This casual (per diem) position is perfect for someone passionate about contributing to life-changing medicine in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Position Details: Shift: Varied daylight shifts, Monday through Friday. Location: Clinical Lab Building in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, near UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate role (Histotechnician or Histotechnologist) and salary level based on experience and education. The Histotechnologist role starts at $24.32 per hour.

Requirements

Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR an Associate's degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
One year of clinical histology laboratory experience post-training with certification OR 3 years of experience working as Histology Lab Technician or equivalent title without certification
Successful completion of bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
One year of clinical histology laboratory experience post training if not a graduate of accredited training program required.
American Society Clinical Pathology Histology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 18 months of hire.
Employees active in a Histotechnician position, on or before the effective date 1/1/2004, at a healthcare facility, are grandfathered regarding certification and will not need to obtain it unless they move into a different position that would require certification.
American Society Clinical Pathology Histotechnologist- HTL (ASCP) certification required within 12 months of hire.
Act 34

Responsibilities

Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures and work practices.
Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
Supports academic mission of department.
Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.
Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
