Summary of Position The Histotech III (Neuro) performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures. Works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks. This position requires the ability to fully understand all equipment, its maintenance, and its processes. Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department. Performs instrument and reagent validations and staff training.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certified.
  • Six plus (6+) years of experience in an anatomical pathology laboratory, with IHC experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the equipment used daily, including, but not limited to, microtome, stainer/cover slipper, slide labeler, cryostat, and tissue processors.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to thrive in a team and service-oriented environment and must maintain a professional demeanor in interactions with physicians and lab personnel.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
  • May be exposed to hazardous waste material, including stain waste (i.e., hematoxylin, eosin, etc.), aromatic hydrocarbons (xylene), and other combustible organics (i.e., ethyl alcohol and isopropanol).
  • Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
  • Ability to tolerate extensive periods seated and/or standing.
  • Must possess the ability to perform repetitive motion.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes, and bio-hazardous material/chemicals, including formalin, in the lab environment.
  • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents; handle live human specimens, tissues, and bodily fluids.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine histology to include specimen processing, embedding, slide preparation, microtomy, enzyme histo staining, and immunohistochemistry on fixed and frozen biopsies.
  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling.
  • Correctly prepares special stains and solutions.
  • Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers match blocks and slides; prints labels as appropriate.
  • Records all slides and stains prepared daily.
  • Logs appropriate information into the LIS system.
  • Performs instrument & reagent validations and staff training.
  • Performs routine maintenance of equipment and troubleshoots minor equipment failures.
  • Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests.
  • Follows appropriate laboratory safety protocols.
  • Microscopic evaluation of stained slides for quality assurance.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies and documents all quality control activities.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
  • Adheres to attendance and punctuality guidelines.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
