The History of Medicine Processing Archivist at Rutgers University Libraries will lead the arrangement and description of the History of Medicine's archival holdings. This role involves migrating legacy finding aids into the ArchivesSpace repository, establishing a collection management infrastructure, and supporting the research needs of library users. The archivist will ensure both intellectual and physical control of the collection, working closely with faculty librarians and archivists to enhance access to archival materials in both analog and digital formats.

  • Survey, appraise, arrange, and describe HoM archives holdings.
  • Provide reference, access, and outreach services for the HoM collections.
  • Develop and implement plans to accession, arrange, describe, and provide access to archival materials in analog and digital forms.
  • Highlight and promote the HoM collection through displays, social media, and news articles.
  • Perform other duties incidental to work described herein.
  • An ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent master's degree in archives management.
  • Prior professional or pre-professional experience working with documentary material in an archive or special collections repository.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with, archival techniques and practices.
  • Ability to manage and complete a diverse range of projects in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Demonstrated research and discursive writing skills.
  • Ability to work creatively and effectively, both individually and with a team.
  • Ability to perform physical work common in archives repositories such as moving archives boxes on and off the shelf or pushing a loaded library cart to and from collection storage spaces.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; the ability to work both independently and in a collegial environment; and experience working effectively with a diverse clientele.
  • One or more years of demonstrated experience arranging, describing, and managing archives or manuscript collections.
  • Demonstrated experience using current and emerging technologies to improve access to archives and/or manuscript collections.
  • Working knowledge of preservation and/or conservation best practices.
  • Knowledge of ArchivesSpace.
