About The Position

This Historical Interpreter II is responsible for conducting daily operations and interpretation at the new Thomas Day State Historic Site in Milton, North Carolina. The Thomas Day State Historic Site is a site with 5 structures, including a Visitor's Center, and a Historic House. The site offers regular tours of the Historic House, virtual presentations, and off-site programming, all focused on the life and work of Thomas Day and African American Craftsmen from across the state. The Thomas Day House was the home and cabinet-shop of Thomas Day, a free Black artisan who owned the largest cabinet-shop in the state from 1848-1871. The workweek will consist of Tuesday through Saturday 8:30 to 5:00 pm with some work at night required during special events, etc. Historic Interpreter II will be responsible for the development of interpretive programs and special events. Greet and orient site visitors, conduct tours and special programs, operate the gift shop, and give on-site and off-site presentations. Plan and coordinate on-site special events, schedule, and coordinate group visits. Provide interpretative programming, conduct artifact management and care, and conduct general office work. Coordinate site publicity via media outlets and social media, answer outreach inquiries, and coordinate outreach logistics. Assist with internships and volunteer recruitment and assist with site maintenance and cleaning. The person in this position must have good written and oral communication.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of experience in giving or developing museum tours; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be available to work the schedule of Tuesday-Saturday with occasional night or weekend work required as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to walk long distances on uneven ground with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • good written and oral communication

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with special events and/or special programs.
  • A general knowledge of historic costuming
  • Experience with public speaking.
  • Beginning level proficiency with Microsoft Word.
  • Knowledge of adapting historical tours to age, interest level, special interests, and/or time constraints.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting tours and programs as part of visitor services.
  • Giving general on-site and off-site presentations and coordinating on-site special events and programs, schedule, and group visits.
  • Conducting appropriate artifact management and care techniques.
  • Assisting with internships coordinating/recruiting a volunteer program
  • Researching historical topics related to the site or area.
  • Operating gift shop and managing gift shop inventory.
  • Assisting with light maintenance and janitorial duties at site.
  • Coordinate site publicity via media outlets and social media, answer outreach inquiries, and coordinate outreach logistics
  • Producing reports as needed.
