About The Position

The Historic Preservation Specialist at Sarasota County Government is responsible for coordinating and promoting the county's historic preservation programs, including the Sarasota County Register of Historic Places and the Historical Marker Program. This role involves advising property owners, managing the designation process for historic resources, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The position also includes outreach and customer service related to historic preservation, making it essential for candidates to have a strong background in historic architecture or preservation planning.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History or a related field.
• Two (2) years of related work experience.
• Valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.

• Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History or a related field.
• Four years of experience in a related field.

Responsibilities

• Identify historic resources eligible for local and/or national designation through contracted surveys or in-house fieldwork.
• Coordinate the designation process for newly identified significant historic resources, including advising nominators on the process and reviewing submitted nominations.
• Coordinate the certificate of appropriateness process for managing alterations to designated historic properties, including advising property owners and reviewing applications.
• Advise property owners regarding the county's ad valorem tax exemption program and review program applications.
• Coordinate the county's Historical Marker Program, including promoting the program and reviewing applications for new markers.
• Ensure compliance with Chapter 66 of the Sarasota County Code of Ordinances and other applicable laws.
• Prepare reports and maintain records required by Sarasota County's status as a Certified Local Government.
• Advise neighborhood organizations on historic preservation in community planning.
• Conduct outreach relating to historic preservation and the history of Sarasota County.
• Produce preservation-related content for exhibits and communications in collaboration with other Division staff.
• Assist with programs, exhibits, and special events hosted by the Division.
• Answer historical research inquiries received from the public.
