About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to engage the public in experiencing the 18th and early 19th century history of New Bern and Eastern North Carolina within the context of colonial and early United States history. This will most often take the form of costumed interpretation and acting as Education’s coordinator for demonstration cooking, and foodways interpretation. Other job duties include 18th and 19th century research and new tour development.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of experience in giving museum tours; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to work Tuesday-Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm with some evening, additional weekend and holiday work as required.
  • Ability to exert 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, or 10 pounds constantly to move objects with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work in seasonally cold and hot weather outside in historic clothing.
  • Ability to traverse the 21 acres of Tryon Palace with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in costumed interpretation.
  • Experience in 18th century cooking and foodways.
  • A Certificate of Interpretive Guiding (CIG) from the National Association of Interpretation (NAI).
  • Experience working with volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Give costumed tours of Tryon Palace and other historic buildings and areas on-site.
  • Manage the Tryon Palace demonstration cooking program. This includes purchasing food, researching recipes, and training other staff in how to cook and interpret 18th century food.
  • Assist with the planning and guiding of large field trip groups that visit Tryon Palace.
  • Assist with training new hires, reporting issues on site, staff development.
  • Share point-person duties on Saturdays, work weekend events.
  • Research and create new content.
