About The Position

UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a full-time Histology Trainee to join the Histology Lab team! This is an opportunity for on-the-job training, leading to an exciting career in the clinical histology lab! If you have a science-related educational background and are interested in a meaningful career in the medical lab field - this may be the perfect fit for you! Position Details: Shift: Daylight hours (5:00-7:00 AM start time) during training. Transitions to an evening shift role (1:00 PM-9:30 PM) upon completion of training. Location: Clinical Lab Building in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, near UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. This is a one-year training program to learn and develop independent skills to become a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist. Learn to perform all job duties of a Histotechnician/Histotechnologist, with the assistance of training resources and in-lab support. Upon the completion of the training year, the Histology Trainee is eligible to sit for the ASCP board certification exam and is eligible for the histology career ladder pathway. Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Associate degree with 12+ biology and/or chemistry credits or bachelor's degree with 30+ biology and/or chemistry credits in Health Sciences preferred.
  • Act 34

Responsibilities

  • Become familiar with the mission, vision and values of UPMC.
  • Develop an understanding of the Laboratory Service Center organization and align with its mission and goals.
  • Develop a working understanding of histology laboratory operations by progressively training in all areas of the laboratory throughout the course of the training program.
  • Commit to a yearlong training program, focusing on and developing proficiency in embedding, microtomy, general routine slide handling, special stain slide handling, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Commit to self-study and utilization of ample educational resources in preparation for ASCP certification as a histotechnician or histotechnologist.
  • Achieving ASCP certification following the training year is strongly recommended as it is required for career ladder advancement.
