About The Position

Bring your passion to Texas Health so we are Better + Together. This position is for a Histology Technologist II PRN, located at 6100 Harris Parkway, Fort Worth, TX 76132. The work hours are as needed, Monday through Friday from 5:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The department emphasizes teamwork, mentorship, comprehensive training, and opportunities for growth.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology, Clinical Lab Science or Chemical, Physical or Biological Science preferred.
  • HT (ASCP) Histotechnician required within 90 days from hire.
  • HTL (ASCP) Histotechnologist required within 90 days from hire.
  • HT Certification is highly preferred.
  • Strong embedding and cutting experience highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Follows laboratory procedure for specimen collection, handling, and processing.
  • Follows established protocols for handling unsatisfactory specimens.
  • Accessions surgical and cytology specimens.
  • Specimen processing and surgical pathology dissection assistance.
  • Maintains worksheet, prepares and labels tissue cassettes and requisition.
  • Knows the proper fixation and stores dissected tissue.
  • Loads tissue processor.
  • Cuts and stains thin quality frozen sections within 20 minutes of receipt to pathologic diagnosis.
  • Maintains a clean, fresh staining line and uses manual technique for correct HE staining.
  • Maintains cryostat according to procedural guidelines.
  • Embeds and orients surgical specimens in paraffin.
  • Cuts thin, wrinkle-free sections and follows protocol for each specimen type.
  • Prepares slides and stains following established protocols.
  • Operates automated stainer and uses manual staining technique.
  • Performs special stains and prepares reagents.
  • Operates automated coverslipper and performs hand coverslipping.
  • Follows established protocols for processing cytology specimens.
  • Assists with fine needle aspiration and special procedures.
  • Facilitates workflow process and checks outstanding tests list in a timely manner.
  • Troubleshoots and follows through on outstanding tests.
  • Utilizes time between testing to accomplish other needed tasks.
  • Participates in orientation and training of students, volunteers, new employees, and observers.
  • Maintains commitment to profession by attending continuing education sessions.
  • Completes mandatory hospital/laboratory education and departmental competencies.
  • Documents quality control utilizing appropriate methods.
  • Utilizes protective safety equipment and engineering controls as required.
