Job Summary Battelle is currently seeking a Histology Technician within our Life Science Research Group . This position will serve our Columbus, OH and West Jefferson, OH location. Battelle’s Life Science Research Group brings together highly trained scientists and technicians with state-of-the-art facilities to support toxicology, safety pharmacology, inhalation, infectious disease, and broader biomedical research programs. The Histology Technician is responsible for but not limited to tissue trimming, processing, embedding of tissues, routine and special slide staining, slide cover-slipping, microtomy, slide quality control, and tissue/block/slide inventory.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in animal science/zoology or related biology field plus 1 years’ experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Ability to be organized, multitask, communicate effectively with a team and diverse individuals, and desire to learn new skills.
  • Ability to change processes quickly, and help identify areas of inefficiency
  • Sufficiently medically fit to do work in a lab wearing appropriate respiratory equipment and perform assigned duties.
  • Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) in support of non-clinical studies.
  • Demonstrated detail-orientation and strong organizational skills.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills and work well with others (team approach is required).
  • Knowledge in Excel, Word, Access, and SharePoint.
  • Must be willing to participate in periodic drug screening.
  • Must be willing to work occasional evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
  • Newly hired employees are subject to a 90-day introductory period, during which their performance is evaluated.
  • Adherence to chemical agent, facility, and bio-facility safety requirements.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain enrollment in CDC Select Agent Suitability Assessment Program.

  • Experience with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within histology field to include but not limited to: tissue embedding, staining, microtomy, quality control of tissues, and tissue/slide inventory.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex histological procedures from tissue trimming, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy (frozen and paraffin), H&E staining, special staining, and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining.
  • Routine Operation of various histology laboratory equipment
  • Act as lab technical point of contact.
  • Laboratory cleaning and upkeep of equipment and space.
  • Inventory, ordering and receipt of supplies.
  • Waste management, preparation of bleach and other decontamination solutions.
  • Use proper technique to operate necessary equipment to produce high quality data.
  • Perform routine maintenance and/or calibration of equipment as necessary.
  • Prepare, maintain, and archive equipment logbooks.
  • Operate routine computer programs and perform basic data manipulation in a spreadsheet environment.
  • Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software.
  • Read SOPs, methods, facility guidelines, etc. used in workplace in a timely manner and adhere to these procedures.
  • Record data and perform quality control reviews in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • Perform timely quality control and/or technical review of electronic and/or paper data.
  • Create and maintain study files in accordance with standard operating procedures, protocol, quality requirements and client specifications.
  • Prepare and submit study files and forms to Quality Control or Quality Assurance.
  • Recognize when technical operations deviate from accepted practices and prepare deviation reports as needed.
  • Report observations/problems clearly and concisely, recognizing and highlighting specific deviations.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements.
  • Train and guide less experienced staff on specific tasks.
  • Serve as technical co-lead on portions of studies.
  • Work independently and efficiently in a team environment.
  • Works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature where ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice is required.
  • Exhibits sufficient technical knowledge to perform routine assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate basic equipment and follow standard procedures.
  • Performs routine specified analysis of data.
  • Verifies the accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work.
  • Is encouraged to make recommendations but has limited discretion when making judgments and completing tasks.
  • Conducts standard as well as non-standard tasks under close supervision and guidance of more experienced staff.
  • Keeps supervisor informed regularly on status of work.
