About The Position

The Histology Technician prepares surgical specimen for microscopic examination by the Pathologist. Processes tissues which may include dehydration, embedding, cutting, staining, decalcification, and frozen section cryostat methods. This role assures specimen are prepared following all quality control (QC) policies and biohazard regulations. Performs procedures within established turn-around-times and maintains a clean, well-organized work area. Responds to out of range QC conditions. Documents and tracks specimens in the laboratory tracking system. Reports promptly all “near misses,” potential, and actual errors. Provides suggestions for error prevention and participates in continuous quality improvement process. Assists with ordering and storing supplies. Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct. Supports the laboratory mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, quality control requirements, and preventative maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate Degree in medical technology or related science preferred.
  • Knowledge of section specific test methodology and instrumentation is required.
  • Previous experience as a Histology Tech preferred.

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology certification for Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL)
