About The Position

The Histology Technician is responsible for obtaining and preparing tissue specimens from various body tissues for microscopic examination. This role involves demonstrating proficiency in grossing specimens, fixation, cutting, mounting on slides, and staining of tissue samples for dermatopathologist review. The technician must prioritize testing procedures, ensuring they are completed accurately and in a timely manner, while maintaining comprehensive records in compliance with established policies, procedures, and regulations.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in histology, including staining and microtome use.
  • Experience in Mohs sectioning and pathology.
  • Knowledge of immunohistochemistry and accessioning.
  • ASCP HT or HTL certification or eligible by ASCP standards to obtain certification
  • 2 plus years of histology experience.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year of Mohs experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex histological procedures using techniques such as grossing, staining, drying, and freezing to preserve and test samples.
  • Prepare tissue specimens for routine and special procedures to obtain a patient diagnosis.
  • Access and gross tissue specimens, processing them by embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping, and filing.
  • Prepare slides of specimens using specified stains to enhance visibility under a microscope.
  • Trim tissue specimens into blocks and fix tissue in fixing solutions or formalin.
  • Examine and study slides under a microscope to detect deviations from the norm and report abnormalities requiring further study.
  • Record and analyze data accurately.
  • Prepare media, chemicals, reagents, and store samples per established policies and procedures.
  • Maintain, clean, and repair equipment and instruments according to established procedures and manufacturer's instructions.
  • Establish and monitor quality control programs, performing required quality control, maintenance, and assurance.
