About The Position

The Histology Technician is responsible for preparing tissue specimens for pathological examination and supporting the daily operations of the pathology laboratory. This role includes slide preparation, quality control, troubleshooting specimen issues, maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards. The Histology Technician exercises independent judgment within established procedures and maintains specimen integrity and patient identification at all times.

Requirements

  • Degree in Histology or related discipline required.
  • Certification required (ASCP).
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a Histology laboratory required.
  • Working knowledge of current histology techniques and pathology lab guidelines.
  • Knowledge of laboratory regulatory standards and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to safely handle infectious and hazardous materials.
  • Strong attention to detail and concentration skills.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Ability to operate and train on laboratory equipment.
  • ASCP Certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Slide Preparation (55%): Cuts and prepares tissue specimens for pathological review. Ensures accurate specimen accessioning and labeling. Maintains specimen integrity and patient identification throughout processing. Prioritizes and triages specimens accurately and efficiently. Handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste in accordance with laboratory procedure manuals. Ensures compliance with all regulatory policies and safety standards.
  • Quality Assurance (10%): Prepares, maintains, and monitors reagents. Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment as required.
  • Quality Control (10%): Maintains procedures and documentation to meet all regulatory and accreditation standards. Ensures proper documentation of QC activities.
  • Troubleshooting & Problem Solving (10%): Responsible for resolving issues such as: Specimen and requisition received without corresponding LIS orders. Specimen received without requisition and no LIS orders. Requisition received without specimen. Communication and issue resolution with physicians, nurses, and clinical staff.
  • Plant & Equipment (5%): Maintains a clean, organized, and professional laboratory environment. Ensures the department appears tidy at the end of each workday.
  • Additional Duties (3%): Performs additional duties as assigned, including ordering supplies.
  • Independent Judgment (5%): Performs work in accordance with established procedures using discretion and sound judgment. Handles complaints and determines appropriate corrective actions.
  • Review of Lab Policies & Procedures (2%): Reviews all laboratory procedure manuals annually or as changes occur in a timely manner when assigned.
