About The Position

Serves as an expert working on high-complexity testing with proficiency in system/test validation and writing technical policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree science and/or completion of histology training program or equivalent training as defined by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP.
  • 5 years histology experience and
  • Has experience in test /method validation and writing technical policies and procedures.
  • (HT) HISTOLOGIC TECHNICIAN or
  • HTL (ASCP).

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform work of considerable complexities in order to achieve general results by interpretation of policy and using ingenuity, initiative and good judgment, and/or precedents to work problems having broader implications.
  • Keep abreast of new technical developments.
  • Assist with implementation of new tests, equipment, programs and/or procedures in the assigned area(s) as needed.
  • Specialist learn new laboratory procedures and techniques and introduce them to their team.
  • Accountable for on-going training and professional development of staff.
  • Assist in developing performance standards.
  • Performs advanced/specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques.
  • Reruns work of others to confirm test results.
  • Re-evaluates methodology and makes recommended changes to assist in test interpretation.
  • Determines if further testing should be done on samples or if test should be repeated.
  • Performs frozen sections, oversees and participates in the daily preparation of paraffin sections for staining of patient tissue, performs all level of special stain, histochemical and immunohistochemical stains in work area, quality assurance and quality control monitors, and equipment maintenance.
  • Knowledgeable about specialized histology and histochemical procedures, such as those of enzymes, polysaccharides, immunohistochemical and immuno fluorescents.
  • Performs duties of histotechnologist as necessitated by absence or peak workload.
  • Anticipate and identify issues related to results of analysis and be able to troubleshoot through lab testing issues.
  • Assist in the creation and revision of laboratory policies and technical procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with Clinical Laboratory Services Quality assurance requirements.
  • Adherence to state, federal rules and regulations; ensures compliance with accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains continuing laboratory quality improvement/education program at institutional, local and national/international level.
  • Responsible as a primary source of information for maintaining current instrumentation.
  • Troubleshoots instrumentation and equipment problems during the shift to ensure uninterrupted testing.
  • Responsible for coordination of training in the methods and techniques of the appropriate specialty area with guidance of the manager/supervisor.
  • Able to work, process and analyze methods utilized in the laboratory and ensures goal and expectations are achieved by the department.
  • Performs special projects such as evaluation of new reagents, procedures, tests, or other duties as assigned.
  • Achieves a minimum of 10 continuing education hours annually. Continuously seeks knowledge in and outside of functional area.
  • Actively participates in Performance Improvement Activities.
  • Serves on committees and task forces.
  • Orientates and instructs students and laboratory personnel in established clinical laboratory techniques, as required.
  • Ensures compliance with rules and regulations of regulatory accreditation agencies such as TJC, CAP, AABB and OSHA,
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
