About The Position

The Histology Technician performs the various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. Performs embedding, cutting, mounting, and staining procedures. Sorts and prioritizes tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or necropsy cases according to the standards required. Follows TAMU policy and procedures in accordance with lab safety.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of related lab experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in scientific field.
  • HT (ASCP) certification
  • Ability to perform processing, cutting, embedding, staining, and coverslipping.
  • Performs QC documentation, instrument troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Communication with pathologists and residents Answers questions, complete requests, and follows up with pathologists and residents
  • Monitors submission’s page and completes cases when they are ready for delivery to the pathologist.
  • Monitors slide and/or block check out requests from pathologists and residents
  • Evaluates and analyzes results by QCing slides before sending them to the pathologist and residents
  • Sorts specimens according to priority when embedding.
  • Embeds specimens into blocks.
  • Performs microtomy (cutting tissue sections) in accordance with general approved plans and procedures
  • Performs routine staining of slides using an automated stainer.
  • Plans and executes procedures (and work details) for preparing solutions for performing special staining.
  • Retrieves specimens from the Necropsy Department.
  • Receives specimens for other cases when delivered to the Laboratory.
  • Operates instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing, and infiltration with paraffin.
  • Periodically maintains and cleans equipment as needed (microtomes, embedding unit, tissue processors, automatic stainer, and solvent recycler).
  • Records findings of equipment output through observations and measurements
  • Uses computer equipment for controlling compiling data in order to monitor inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used
  • Places orders for replacements as required.
  • Assists the supervisor in planning and supervising technical operations of the student workers
  • Researches and catalogs reference materials requiring understanding of subject matter theory in order to better assist in training of student workers.
