About The Position

The Histology Technician I position at Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories involves performing routine and special procedures on patients' tissue specimens in preparation for pathological examination. This role is essential in ensuring accurate specimen processing and maintaining high standards of patient care within a collaborative laboratory environment. The technician will work full-time on the second shift, contributing to the laboratory's mission of providing expert academic care and comprehensive clinical laboratory services.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently receives, accepts and recognizes specimens and requests that arrive in the lab, ensuring proper identification and transport conditions.
  • Maintains accuracy when accessioning specimens, making cassettes, and assigning cases, including handling special testing requests according to protocol.
  • Understands processing protocols and sets up tissue for processing, demonstrating knowledge of the Peloris and VIP processors.
  • Recognizes adequacy of processing and identifies problems that may result in inadequately processed tissue, ensuring correct embedding techniques.
  • Operates and maintains microtome according to manufacturer's guidelines, ensuring acceptable sections are produced.
  • Selects appropriate stains and reagents for routine staining, preparing and maintaining necessary solutions.
  • Uses LIS at case assembly to make appropriate changes to cases and resolves discrepancies before slide distribution.
  • Maintains/services laboratory instruments according to established protocols and monitors instrument performance.
  • Operates a cryostat with correct settings to ensure optimum sectioning and labels slides appropriately.
  • Adheres to all histology policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Participates in competency assessments and maintains documentation of competency and improvement plans.
  • Produces special stains and performs manual special stains, updating necessary information in the LIS.
  • Verifies the acceptability of control slides and demonstrates competency in advanced tissue identification.
  • Retrieves IHC orders and accurately labels slides, ensuring quality sections are created.
  • Demonstrates the ability to develop, execute and validate new procedures, writing and revising technical guidelines as needed.
