About The Position

Exercises independent judgment in dealing with procedural and technical problems. Examines slides and/or blocks to ensure tissue preparation is meeting laboratory requirements. Prepares sections of human tissue for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis, using techniques to gross (dissect tissue), embed (orient specimen in paraffinblock), section (cut thin sections of tissue), stain (enhance contrast of tissue and highlight specific features of interest with routine hematoxylin and eosin stains), andmount tissue (adhere tissue onto glass slides), from surgical procedures. Performs recuts and additional stains including special and immunohistochemistry stains, as requested by a Pathologist. Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist. May label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes and/or slides and affixes coverslip to slides. Files, retrieves, and distributes blocks, slides, and pathology reports. Operates and cleans laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstation. Ensures operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions. Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results. Provides pathology/histology information by answering questions and requests. Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks;participating in professional societies. Maintains inter- and intradepartmental work flow by fostering a spirit of cooperation. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies and protocols. Maintains patient confidence and protects the hospital by keeping information confidential. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Anticipates and responds effectively to emergency and stressful situations. Adheres to hospital policies regarding punctuality and absences and is flexible with scheduling. Actively participates in performance improvement projects. Performs any and all job duties as assigned by Director for completion of job requirements. Annual completion of World Health Organization hand hygiene education and training and its relationship to infection control in addition to physical demonstrationand understanding of compliance monitoring.
