About The Position

UPMC Laboratory - Williamsport, PA is currently hiring in our Pathology Department, seeking a dedicated Histology professional to join our team. This is a full-time position with 8.5-hour shifts, starting between 5:00 AM and 5:30 AM. The role includes participation in a 6-week on-call rotation, with weekend on-call hours being: Saturday & Sunday: 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. There are no regularly scheduled weekend or holiday shifts outside of the on-call rotation. We are currently hiring for roles at either the Histology Lab Technician or Histotechnician level. Placement within the career ladder will be determined based on each candidate's education and relevant experience. Compensation varies by role: Histology Lab Technicians range: $26.46/hr - $38.51/hr; Histotechnicians range: $28.03/hr and $42.04/hr. Sign-On Bonus Available for Histotechnician-level candidates: $12,000 for candidates with less than 1 year of Histotechnician experience; $15,000 for candidates with 1 year or more of Histotechnician experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required. Associate's degree preferred.
  • 1 year of clinical histology laboratory experience OR 1 year experience as Histology Trainee required.
  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR an Associate's degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry for Histotechnician qualifications.
  • 1 year of clinical histology laboratory experience post-training with certification preferred OR 3 years of experience working as Histology Lab Technician or equivalent title without certification.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining, and coverslipping, including specialized and minute biopsy protocols.
  • Accurately prepare slides for microtomy using barcode labeling to ensure correct patient identification throughout all stages.
  • Embed and cut tissue following department protocols, ensuring proper orientation and complete sections free of folds, chatter, artifacts, or floaters.
  • Perform quality control checks at each phase of specimen processing and staining.
  • Maintain laboratory instruments according to daily maintenance and quality control standards.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in CoPath software as it relates to histology workflow.
  • Progress toward independent work in advanced staining areas.
  • Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures, and work practices.
  • Perform ancillary tasks such as filing, cleaning, and stocking supplies.
  • Support the academic mission of the department.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team and perform other duties as assigned by lab leadership.
  • Adhere to system-wide competencies and behaviors.
