The Laboratory Manager provides technical expertise and supports system functions through collaboration, standardization, integration, and oversight of related services. Actively manages daily operations of the laboratory/specialty within approved operational and capital budgets, meeting departmental goals. This role involves supervision of analytical testing of blood and/or other biological specimens and managing selected aspects of laboratory processes or shifts. These aspects may include workflow, quality control processes, writing/reviewing procedures, performance improvement activities, training of new employees, and advanced problem solving for customers and coworkers. Responsibilities also encompass department equipment or computer maintenance and upgrades, among other tasks assigned. The Laboratory Manager assists department leadership with meeting goals in all areas and may work with analytical testing of blood and/or human biological specimens as needed. Analytical laboratory testing generally requires a moderate to high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise in licensed area(s). Various pre-and post-analytical work processes are included in the work duties customarily performed, and on-call hours may also be required. The role mandates following laboratory policies and procedures, maintaining quality control practices in the Laboratory, and actively participating in outstanding customer service. It also involves accepting responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. The Laboratory Manager extends excellence in areas including Team, Service, Clinical, Market, and Finance, and promotes efficient patient care by periodically performing and reporting tests and assisting with the supervision of personnel. In coordination with the Medical Director and Director of Laboratory Services, this role develops and maintains policies, procedures, quality assurance programs, and introduces new tests, procedures, and instrumentation as required, including test or instrument evaluation, selection, and/or recommendation. Participates in System Team Meetings as assigned and ensures ongoing competency assessment of staff.
