About The Position

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) plays a crucial role in supporting the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) in delivering effective speech and language services. This position involves a variety of clinical, educational, documentation, and treatment-related activities, all conducted within the framework of responsibilities and care plans established by the supervising SLP and/or physician. The SLPA is expected to work closely with families, students, and district staff, ensuring that communication and support are maintained throughout the treatment process. In this role, the SLPA will implement components of a speech and language program as outlined in the treatment plan developed by the supervising SLP, adhering to the physician's plan of care and state regulations. The SLPA will assist in conducting speech, language, and hearing screenings, although clinical interpretation will remain the responsibility of the SLP. Additionally, the SLPA will provide bilingual translation support during screenings and assessments, ensuring effective communication with students and families who may not speak English. Documentation is a key responsibility, and the SLPA must provide timely and accurate records of student performance, reporting this information to the supervising SLP. The SLPA will also be involved in programming and instructing the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices, as well as sharing feeding strategies developed by the SLP. The role may include adapting educational materials and equipment to meet the needs of students, and the SLPA may serve as an interpreter for non-English speaking students and families. The SLPA will maintain communication with the district and other personnel involved in the care of the student, ensuring that all efforts are aligned with the objectives outlined in the plan of care. Participation in formal care conferences and team meetings will occur only in the presence of the supervising SLP. The SLPA will also support the SLP in various projects, including research, training, and public relations initiatives, while promoting early identification and intervention for communication disorders. Compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations is essential, as is active participation in required supervision to ensure quality care for all individuals served.
