About The Position

The HIM Supervisor is responsible for supporting and overseeing Health Information Management (HIM) operations related to medical record storage, permanent files, scanning, and quality assurance activities. This role plans, implements, directs, and controls assigned HIM functions while supervising associates within the department. Working under the general direction of the Patient Access Services Manager, the HIM Supervisor models behavior consistent with West Cancer Center’s Mission, Vision, and Values.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years of Health Information Management experience.
  • Ability to understand and prepare complex written materials, including policies, procedures, and manuals.
  • Ability to analyze statistical and research data.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with associates, leadership, physicians, patients, and families.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate individuals and teams.
  • Skill in negotiating and collaborating with diverse groups.
  • Strong planning, scheduling, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment, including in critical situations.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and decision-making ability.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management.
  • Credentialed through AHIMA as one of the following:
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through AAPC

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, implement, and control permanent file and scanning operations to meet departmental and organizational goals.
  • Ensure daily HIM department operations run smoothly and efficiently within established guidelines.
  • Set departmental goals, objectives, and strategies aligned with West Cancer Center priorities.
  • Assist with training and orientation of new and existing HIM associates.
  • Oversee daily operational functions including staffing coverage, phone responsiveness, and workflow coordination.
  • Maintain and develop a competent, productive, and quality-focused workforce through orientation, training, and education.
  • Promote effective communication within and outside the department to enhance collaboration and customer service.
  • Provide leadership that encourages associate involvement, creativity, and professional growth.
  • Oversee equipment service needs related to HIM operations and coordinate service requests as needed.
  • Provide guidance for staff scheduling questions or issues and assign daily work responsibilities.
  • Update patient information as necessary and ensure data accuracy.
  • Monitor staff adherence to departmental and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with patients and employees.
  • Interact regularly with management, support teams, and departmental staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
