About The Position

The Release of Information Specialist II is a mid-level role responsible for managing requests to disclose patient protected health information (PHI) in compliance with federal and state laws. This position requires independent performance of all ROI functions and may involve customer service interactions to assist requestors with inquiries. The specialist ensures patient privacy rights are protected and that all releases adhere to Orlando Health policies and legal regulations.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Medical Terminology knowledge required.
• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Minimum typing speed: 35 WPM.
• One (1) year experience in Health Information Management, Health Services Administration, Healthcare Informatics, Customer Service, or related role working with medical records or clinical data in an EMR system.
• Completion of an approved HIM, HIT, or Healthcare Informatics program may substitute for experience.
• Direct experience in Release of Information function required.

Responsibilities

• Process incoming mail, email, and fax requests for medical records promptly.
• Provide exceptional customer service via phone and in-person at walk-in offices.
• Identify request types and route appropriately for processing.
• Ensure compliance with minimum necessary standards when releasing medical records.
• Monitor work queues and prioritize requests based on department guidelines.
• Retrieve patient information from archives, paper files, and electronic systems.
• Review charts for sensitive information prior to release.
• Generate and follow up on correspondence to ensure timely completion of requests.
• Invoice releases accurately and follow up on payments when applicable.
