About The Position

The Coding & HIM Manager is responsible for overseeing all medical coding operations and Health Information Management (HIM) functions to ensure the accuracy, integrity, security, and compliance of patient health records and coded data. This role manages coding staff and HIM teams, supports revenue cycle goals, ensures regulatory compliance, and promotes high-quality clinical documentation across the organization.

Requirements

  • RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC, or equivalent coding/HIM credential.
  • 3–5+ years of progressive coding or HIM experience.
  • 2+ years in a supervisory or management role preferred.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • DRG, APC, and other reimbursement methodologies
  • HIPAA, CMS, and Joint Commission regulations
  • EHR, encoder, abstracting, ROI, and HIM systems
  • Excellent leadership, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Multiple certifications (e.g., RHIA + CCS).
  • Epic experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily coding workflows for inpatient, outpatient, emergency, pro-fee, or multi-specialty encounters.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant assignment of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes per official guidelines.
  • Monitor coding productivity and quality benchmarks; develop improvement plans as needed.
  • Oversee internal and external coding audits; coordinate corrective action and education.
  • Collaborate with Revenue Integrity, CDI, Billing, and Denials teams to reduce errors and support appeals.
  • Stay current with regulatory updates (CMS, AMA, OIG) and communicate timely changes to coding staff.
  • Provide education to providers and staff on documentation and coding best practices.
  • Direct HIM department functions including:
  • Release of Information (ROI)
  • Record integrity and deficiency management
  • Scanning, indexing, and chart completion
  • Documentation governance and retention
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA privacy rules, Joint Commission standards, CMS regulations, and state/federal laws.
  • Oversee record storage and retention schedules; ensure proper destruction procedures.
  • Support organization-wide documentation improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of all patient health information.
  • Lead HIM-related audits, accreditation preparation, and survey readiness.
  • Hire, train, mentor, and evaluate coding and HIM staff.
  • Develop department policies, procedures, and workflows to improve efficiency and compliance.
  • Manage departmental budgets and resource allocation.
  • Work collaboratively with IT on EHR optimization and HIM/coding system updates.
  • Track and report key performance indicators for coding, HIM, and documentation quality.
  • Promote a culture of accuracy, compliance, continuous learning, and teamwork.
