As a privately owned civil contracting firm serving the Southeast, we specialize in site development, underground utilities, roadway construction, and water/wastewater treatment plant projects . Were looking for a dependable and hardworking Hillman to join our Jacksonville-based pipe crews. This role is a critical early step in a long-term civil construction career, with a clear advancement path to Tailman, Pipelayer, and Foreman . If you already have hands-on pipe crew experience and are ready to grow your skills on a professional heavy civil crew, Petticoat-Schmitt is the place to do it.

Requirements

  • Minimum 6 months to 1 year of pipe crew experience required (underground utilities, water, sewer, or storm).
  • Experience working in trenches and supporting active pipe installation operations.
  • Understanding of or hands-on exposure to safe trenching, rigging, and hoisting practices .
  • Ability to take accurate measurements and assist with grade and slope checks.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow hand signals and crew direction.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, and squat for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs and work safely around heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions across various job sites.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites.
  • Basic understanding of underground utility construction practices.
  • Required training: Competent Person, Confined Space, and Equipment Inspection (or ability to obtain).
  • Pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and positive attitude.
  • Represent Petticoat-Schmitt with Accountability, Character, and Teamwork.
  • Stay engaged, safety-focused, and committed to learning.

Nice To Haves

  • Fire extinguisher training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supply materials, tools, and equipment to the trench to support pipe installation crews.
  • Measure and cut pipe to required lengths and assist with pre-assembly on the hill.
  • Mix mortar for brick-up of manholes and assist with joint preparation.
  • Use hand tools such as cutoff saws, wrenches, tampers, pumps, lasers, and levels.
  • Install dewatering systems, including sumps, Kelly wells, well points, and sock drains.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of work zones.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support field operations.
