About The Position

The Highway Technician 1 position involves hands-on maintenance and repair of highways and roadways, including traffic management, snow and ice operations, and the operation of heavy equipment. The role requires working outdoors and performing various maintenance tasks throughout the year, ensuring the safety and functionality of roadways in Summit County.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on maintenance of traffic and flagging.
  • Conduct highway maintenance and repair work activities such as pothole patching, spread berm, repair guardrails, and crack sealing.
  • Manage litter pick-up, drainage, and vegetation management including weed eating, brush cutting, and mowing.
  • Operate heavy equipment like dump trucks and loaders, as well as hand tools such as chainsaws.
  • Perform snow and ice operations, working 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Conduct minor repairs and maintenance on equipment, including sharpening, sanding, painting, and lubricating.
  • Maintain, repair, and install traffic signs and pavement markings on highways and roadways.
  • Keep daily records and logs, including fuel sheets and material check sheets.
  • Respond to general inquiries from the public and assist stranded motorists.
