About The Position

The Highway Technician Senior (Milling Crew) position at the Iowa Department of Transportation involves leading and assisting with milling machine crew operations across the state. This role requires both leadership and hands-on participation in various tasks, including emergency response, snow operations, and traffic control maintenance. The technician will also engage in administrative duties and support internal training efforts, all while promoting safety and integrity within the team.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and experience equal to four years of full-time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.
  • A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience in the specified fields, where thirty semester hours of post-high-school education equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twenty-four months of full-time work as a Highway Technician Associate.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire, with a valid Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements to be obtained within five months.

Nice To Haves

  • Pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as needed.
  • Certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportation's Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction.
  • Attendance at a comprehensive bridge inspection course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with leading the milling machine crew operations.
  • Maintain and operate the milling machine across the state of Iowa.
  • Coordinate work for the team with the supervisor.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as accidents or emergency repairs.
  • Manage snow operations and operate snow equipment.
  • Perform basic office administration via technical devices and software.
  • Host daily operational meetings and monthly safety huddles with the team.
  • Assist with traffic control maintenance activities.
  • Support internal CDL training efforts.
