About The Position

Employees will perform varied manual labor work on highways within Marathon County. Employees usually work Monday through Thursday, typically between 40 - 50 hours per week. Work duties may extend into the fall or winter depending upon availability of seasonal employees and the needs of the department. Summer 2026 - Anticipated season begins mid May and runs through the summer. The Highway Department hires a limited number of seasonal employees for the summer months. The positions remain open until filled. Examples of Work Performed: The following duties are typical of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possession of a driver's license and a driving record that meets County standards.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform varied maintenance tasks.
  • Employee once hired will be state certified in flagger training and work zone setup.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience driving vehicles with manual transmissions desirable.

Responsibilities

  • May perform a variety of manual work flagging traffic, setting work zone signs, etc.
  • May operate mowers of various sizes.
  • May perform routine computer data entry.
  • Maintains daily work logs.
  • May sweep shop floors and perform other custodial duties.
  • May perform landscaping tasks including raking, shoveling, erosion control installation and maintenance, etc.
  • May clean equipment using cleaning agents and other chemicals.
  • May assist full-time employees in road and shoulder repair and maintenance work.
  • Performs other related work as required.
