The Opportunity: We are currently seeking a skilled and driven Highway Project Engineer to join our Lexington office and support our Kentucky transportation projects. This opportunity offers a flexible work schedule with options for hybrid or in-office work, designed to support your work-life balance and professional growth. What You’ll Do: As a Highway Project Engineer, you’ll work on a wide range of complex highway, traffic, and bridge design efforts, contributing to the development of safe, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure. You’ll play a key role in the design and development of urban and rural roadway systems, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and applying cutting-edge design tools to deliver high-quality engineering solutions

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • EIT certification required; PE license preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive highway engineering experience in a consulting or transportation agency environment.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation and InRoads; experience with OpenRoads Designer (ORD) is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of federal, state, and local design standards, specifications, and permitting processes.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks on concurrent projects.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with a collaborative mindset and commitment to professional growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex design challenges and provide actionable, well-supported recommendations.

Nice To Haves

  • PE license preferred.
  • experience with OpenRoads Designer (ORD) is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design of highway, bridge, and traffic projects, including interstates, interchanges, intersection improvements, capacity enhancements, MOT (Maintenance of Traffic), ADA compliance, and site planning.
  • Develop conceptual through final design plans, including alignments, geometric layouts, drainage systems, and safety upgrades.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Senior Engineers, and technical staff to craft practical, cost-effective, and code-compliant design solutions for a wide variety of clients.
  • Utilize Bentley software platforms including OpenRoads Designer (ORD), MicroStation, and InRoads for the preparation of design models, plan sets, and documentation.
  • Conduct field visits and site assessments to collect data, verify conditions, and support active design development.
  • Ensure designs adhere to applicable standards and guidelines including AASHTO, PennDOT, PTC, MUTCD, and ADA regulations.
