About The Position

Under general supervision, operates various types of power construction equipment, such as backhoe, loaders, rubber tire and steel wheel rollers, crack sealing machines and distributors used in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads and bridges by performing the following duties. All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion or initial hiring into a DOT/safety-sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or require a CDL. External job applicants with a confirmed positive drug or alcohol test result shall be denied employment and shall be required to wait one year before applying for another position within Tulsa County

Requirements

  • Skill in operating heavy construction equipment or trucks safely
  • Skill in conforming to construction standards and specifications
  • Skill in making needed adjustments and preventative maintenance
  • Knowledge of functions, operating methods, limitations and care required on heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of road/bridge
  • Knowledge of hazards of heavy equipment operations
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations pertaining to equipment operated
  • Knowledge of safety rules and equipment
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to detect needed equipment repairs and necessary adjustments
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to estimate and calculate materials needed
  • Ability to read blueprints and grade stakes
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to maintain the physical stamina necessary to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Education equivalent to graduation from a standard four year high school and over three years in heavy equipment operation in highway and bridge maintenance or construction.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively to supervisors or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Valid Oklahoma Drivers License
  • Required Class B Commercial Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Operate various pieces of heavy construction equipment or trucks on a regularly assigned basis
  • Check for proper functioning of the equipment during operation and makes needed adjustments
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, including operation pre check for proper fluids and lubricant.
  • Inform supervisor of repair needs or makes field repairs to equipment.
  • May occasionally operate or train on equipment normally assigned to a higher or lower classification
  • Perform labor duties as member of road/bridge crew as necessary.
