About The Position

This position will support the agency’s mission by maintaining and repairing highways, bridges, and related infrastructure to ensure public safety and transportation efficiency. It will involve the use of construction tools and equipment, performing vehicle inspections and maintenance, and working in diverse outdoor conditions. The position also requires effective communication, the ability to follow instructions, and collaboration with team members to complete tasks safely and efficiently.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.
  • Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skills in operating and perform pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time, operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Obtain certification in Maintenance of Traffic - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • This position requires a valid Class “E” driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Maintenance of Traffic control.
