About The Position

This position will perform a variety of roadway maintenance activities on state roads throughout Polk County, including pothole repairs, shoulder work, tree trimming, sidewalk repairs, emergency response, etc. The Highway Maintenance Technician I supports the safety and functionality of Florida’s transportation system through hands-on fieldwork and dependable service.

Requirements

  • Ability to: Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to: Maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures; communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to: Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to: Lift, carry and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to: Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to: Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to: Stand for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to: Perform minor maintenance on vehicles; operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must also be trained and must maintain training certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates.
  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).
  • This position requires a Class E driver’s license.
  • This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following: three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation; any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.
  • Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.

Responsibilities

  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision. Operates a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites.
  • Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment. Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic)
