Requirements

  • Ability to: Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms; maintain and repair highways bridge and/or other highway structures; communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions; develop and maintain effective working relationships with others; lift, carry and handle up to 50 pounds; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis; work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic; stand for an extended period of time; perform minor maintenance on vehicles; operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24 hour) duty when necessary.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • The incumbent must also be trained and must maintain training certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates.
  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Class E Driver’s license is required.
  • This position requires a valid Class (A, B, C, or E) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
  • Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.
  • Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites.
  • Perform pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Preforms rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Preforms Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic)
