About The Position
As a Highway Maintenance Supervisor 1 (HMS 1), duties may include but are not limited to those listed herein. The selected candidate will supervise a highway maintenance crew assigned to the operation of various-sized equipment, involved in maintenance and repair projects on state highways or structural units. These projects might include patching pavements and filling potholes, cleaning ditches and culverts, cutting trees, shrubs, and grass, repairing guiderails and signs, and plowing roads and salting icy pavements in the winter. On large maintenance projects, the selected candidate will supervise a phase of the project under the general direction of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor 2. The HMS 1 is a working supervisor who operates light trucks and heavy dump trucks, performs one-person snow plowing, and operates other pieces of highway equipment, as necessary. The role also involves instructing crewmembers in the tasks to be performed, all safety requirements and Department policies, and answering any questions concerning the aforementioned procedures. The supervisor will personally observe work in progress and work completed to ensure adherence to guidelines and instructions, maintain time and attendance records and materials used on the jobs in MMS, and submit brief written reports when requested. The HMS 1 must complete all required training and answer emergency calls outside of regular work hours, being able to respond to Snow and Ice related callouts within one (1) hour. Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
