About The Position

Highway Maintenance Specialist District One / District Maintenance / Heartland Operations Center This position will coordinate with the supervisor in the maintenance activities of the In-House Field Crews and oversees crews performing maintenance activities. Prepares accurate daily crew reports, work needs surveys, and coordinates with other crews and/or resources. This position supports the safety and functionality of Florida’s transportation system through hands-on fieldwork and dependable service. Requirements

  • Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • Requires one year of infrastructure construction or maintenance experience.
  • An additional year of experience, for a total of two years’ experience, in infrastructure construction or maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.
  • This position requires a valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
  • To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with supervisor in the activities of the Department of Correction's contract of maintenance activities and/or In-House Field Crews.
  • Prepares accurate daily crew reports, work needs surveys to identify deficiencies, reviewing work order request, coordinating with other crews and/or resources as directed and scheduling crews to complete work.
  • Operate a squad truck with trailer attachments for the transport of crews or inmates and supplies, and/or specialized equipment to perform roadway/roadside maintenance activities.
  • Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
  • Inspect work of inmate crews and/or In-House Field Crews to ensure that priority, production, quality, efficiency, and customer service are properly addressed and accounted for.
  • Conducts meetings with crew leaders and crew members to evaluate concerns and establish plans to improve job performance.
  • Provide and/or participate in work zone traffic control for various activities, in accordance with current Florida Department of Transportation standards.
  • Coordinate as directed with contracts, warehouse, shop, front office, and other support areas to resolve issues.
  • Schedules crews to address work orders, customer complaints, natural disasters and other emergency and on-call/call out situations.
  • Provide technical training, insight, and direction to crew members to ensure appropriate methods are used to complete quality work products.
  • Ensure that time, materials, and equipment are tracked by Maintenance Management System standards and work is completed within the terms of the agreement and/or as assigned.
  • Determine the type and amount of materials and supplies from the warehouse for each crew on an as needed basis and ensure correct charging of site location, crew and request.
  • Performs minor operational maintenance and ensures proper periodic preventative maintenance schedule is performed in a timely manner and equipment is kept in good working condition by coordinating with local automotive shop.
  • Ensure proper preparation of shop work order documentation.
