About The Position

The Tutor supports the mission of TRIO Upward Bound by providing academic tutoring, mentoring, and positive role modeling to high school students. This position enhances student academic success, personal growth, and college readiness through individualized support during after-school tutoring sessions, monthly Saturday sessions, and other program activities as assigned. Please note: This position will work at Two Rivers High School and South St Paul High School.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand and follow directions and maintain records and documentation.
  • Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide direction to program participants.
  • Ability to provide remedial tutoring at an elementary or secondary level in academic areas, e.g. mathematics, writing, computer skills.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods during tutoring sessions, Saturday sessions, and program events.
  • Frequent movement between classrooms, offices, and activity spaces in school and college settings.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying instructional materials, testing supplies, or light equipment (typically up to 25 pounds).
  • Ability to work in a variety of learning environments, including classrooms, libraries, computer labs, and event spaces.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person, over the phone, and via electronic platforms.
  • Must be able to maintain visual and auditory attention to monitor student engagement and provide academic assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year of experience working with high school students.
  • Knowledge of challenges facing first-generation and income-eligible students.
  • Familiarity with college entrance exams (ACT/SAT).
  • Experience with TRIO programs or personal experience as a first-generation, low-income student, or similar background.
