About The Position

As a vital member of a school, counselors maximize the success of all students by planning, implementing, evaluating, and improving the school’s comprehensive school counseling program. Use a multi-tiered, multi-domain, holistic system of support to promote students’ academic, college/career, and social/emotional development, spending the majority of their time in direct service with students or communicating with others on behalf of students. School counselors lead, advocate, and collaborate to affect positive systemic change that promotes equity and access for all students.

Requirements

Master's Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work. Degrees and credits must be earned from a nationally accredited college or university.
Minimum 3 years' experience in a directly related area.
Excellent communication skills including written, oral, and listening; organizational skills; and interpersonal skills needed to relate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and the general public.
High physical and emotional energy, problem-solving mindset, and a supreme ability to handle stress.
Intermediate or better level of technology use and application.
High degree of professionalism and genuine concern for the well-being of students.
Working knowledge of community resources.
Knowledge of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Nice To Haves

Previous experience working in an indigenous, education or nonprofit setting.
Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, history and/or language.
Experience in college application and admissions process.
Membership in state and national professional organizations (i.e. American School Counselor. Association, Hawaiʻi School Counselor Association, National Association for College Admission Counseling, Hawaiʻi Association for College Admission Counseling).

Responsibilities

Implement a school counseling program that is aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, schoolwide goals and improvement metrics, KS organizational priorities, and current, evidence-based practices and systems that have been shown to promote student success.
The majority of the counselor’s time is spent providing direct student services (instruction, testing, screening, advisement, and counseling with students) and indirect student services (curriculum development and assessment, collaboration, consultation, secondary school reports, letters of recommendations, referrals with families, teachers, administrators, school staff, and community stakeholders) in order to guide and personalize students educational journey towards students' passions and interests.
Engage in high-quality school counseling system support, including, but not limited to the development of action plans, student intervention plans, lesson plans, annual planning calendars, relevant professional development to better individual counselor practice, needs assessments, results reports, data-sharing presentations, progress monitoring of school counseling interventions and activities, planning time for the creation and improvement of data-driven school counseling interventions, regular meetings with other school counselors including participation in E Ola! PLC, etc..
Collaborate with teachers, staff, and community programs and resources and engage with students and families to explore post-secondary educational and career opportunities, including college selection, planning, preparation, and admissions, and career exploration and identification. Engagement strategies may include hosting evening workshops, teaching guidance/counseling classes, and using online tools.
Support students’ post-secondary plans by advising students on a 4-year plan and certificate options aligned to their individual goals, passions and interests.
Implement a multi-tiered system of support, whereby: o Comprehensive Tier 1 school counseling supports reach all students, including the teaching of developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive guidance grounded in E Ola! and Hawaiian Culture-Based Education and schoolwide programs and activities designed to shift student attitudes, knowledge, and skills. o Intentional, targeted, culturally responsive Tier 2 school counseling interventions are provided for students identified as deserving of additional support (via predetermined data metrics and/or referrals). o Intensified Tier 3 school counseling supports/referrals are conducted for students experiencing emergency or crisis situations, as well as those whose needs remain unmet after receiving Tier 2 supports.
Provide referrals to resources to support students in need of long-term therapy or treatment of a mental, emotional, or bodily disorder.
Consult, collaborate, and team with key stakeholders, including parents, teachers, other staff, and community partners to support student success (i.e. participating on Student Success Teams; referring students/families to Behavioral Health Specialists or community resources; sharing evidence-based support strategies with families and staff; serving as a student advocate; providing family education; teaming with other student services personnel; reaching out to other experts and stakeholders to obtain information on students’ needs; teaming/partnering/serving on committees and advisory boards; creating formalized partnerships with community based organizations).
Support a data-driven school counseling system that includes: o Regular reviews of school and student data to inform data-driven student success outcomes through program SMART goals, tiered supports, closing the gap activities, interventions, equity initiatives, and advocacy efforts. o Evaluating and sharing the results of the school counseling program’s impact and effectiveness with key stakeholders. Providing recommendations for improving the school counseling program. Seek feedback regularly.
Promote equity and access for all students and make a significant impact in creating a school culture of safety, free from racism and bias in all forms.
Utilize technology and other virtual tools to regularly document and track student and parent interactions, support efficient and effective program delivery and communication with the school community.
Remain current on counseling best practices and abides by the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counseling and the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards and Competencies to guide professional growth and development.
As appropriate, supports and attends student activities and events.
