About The Position

A Head Coach teaches student athletes the basics of particular sport, as well as setting structure for the offensive and defensive play during games and managing subordinate coaches. Other duties include arranging practices and recruiting new players. Their role is enhance the skills and abilities of the athletes with a stress on enjoying the spirit of the game. The head coach may work with an assistant to plan the strategies and overall game. The Head Coach will guide student-athletes to play a fair game following rules and regulations; and to encourage students to maintain academic eligibility. The person selected must have an acceptable to the district background check. Display strong communication, motivational and organizational skills. Team-building abilities and working in a collaborative environment are essential for a Head Coach. They should also be able to draw assistant coaches together to achieve the same goal and work off of the same plan. It is up to a Head Coach to decide which player is assigned to a particular position and to create both offensive and defensive plays to be used in game situations. This would involve working with assistant coaches in developing game plans. A Head Coach also oversees and decides on any changes to these plans during actual games. Equip the players in training drills during the practice sessions. Will always be on the lookout of new talent and encourage the players to be on their best foot. Inculate a team spirit among the players as well boost the confidence of the players Apart from the game duties, the coach will supervise students during all aspects of the sport. Encourage the players develop weak areas and provide support helping player to evolve. Other responsibilities include to keep players abreast of their everyday progress, to always speak to player in a way to develop the confidence of the players. Maintain provided budget Follow local, state and national organization procedures, rules and guidelines. Be present at all practices, games and while traveling. Skills of Coach Must maintain an image of a positive role model. Good organizing skills in making good game plans. Must possess a mastery over the game, with relative experience and talent. Significant motivational skills to encourage the players to play fair game. The coach must have in depth knowledge about the different strategies implemented to play the game. Must be physically as well as mentally strong. Has acquired the skill to play in the spirit of the game. Must have excellent interpersonal skills Leadership qualities to coordinate the game. Must possess patience and have outstanding quality to perform under pressure, be an inspiration to the sportsperson to play in the spirit of the game. Maintain a calm stance on losing the game without putting the blame or discouraging the players. Clear, professional communication with players, administration, parents and community. To be a Head Coach it is necessary to have a love for the sport and commendable expertise in playing the sport.

Requirements

  • A four-year college degree or serving as an approved assistant coach for a minimum of two school years.
  • A professional teacher certificate or NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course (online) passed prior to second year of coaching (one time requirement)
  • Completion of a Sports First Aid Course prior to second year, CPR Certification (provided if hired), Concussion Sports Course, MSHSAA Sport-Specific Online Rules Review each season and background check including sex-offenders registry clearance prior to coach.
  • Must maintain an image of a positive role model.
  • Good organizing skills in making good game plans.
  • Must possess a mastery over the game, with relative experience and talent.
