JDE: 4.07 English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher Position Summary The purpose of an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher is to instruct non-English speaking individuals on the fundamentals of the English language so that they can communicate with others. This includes organizing courses for non-native speakers with diverse activities and methods that cover all aspects of the English language (speaking, writing, and comprehending). As a teacher in our school, you’ll create individualized educational plans based on each student’s needs.

Requirements

  • Meet teacher certification requirements and English as a K-12 Second Language (ESL) of the Department of Education, State of Iowa
  • Successful experience in teaching secondary students learning English as a second language
  • Previous experience in collaborating with department/grade level teams to support English Learners
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Responsibilities

  • Provides consultative/coaching support to classroom teachers on EL strategies and meeting the needs of ELs in the general education setting.
  • Demonstrates ability to enhance academic performance.
  • Demonstrates competence in content knowledge appropriate to the teaching position.
  • Demonstrates competence in planning and preparing for instruction.
  • Uses strategies to deliver instruction that meets the multiple learning needs of students.
  • Uses a variety of methods to monitor student learning.
  • Demonstrates competence in classroom management.
  • Engages in professional growth.
  • Fulfills professional responsibilities established by the school district
  • Performs other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the Superintendent or Principal.
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Provide excellent customer service and assistance to all employees, fostering a welcoming and approachable atmosphere.
  • Work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions with colleagues, students, and families.
  • Use positive and professional communication in all interactions.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and policies established by the Ankeny Community School District to ensure the safety of oneself and others.
  • Support District goals and objectives while adhering to all District policies, contributing to the overall success of the school community.
  • Demonstrate regular and dependable attendance to ensure smooth District operations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
