Job Summary: The School Counselor will provide individual and group counseling services to address the needs and concerns of a diverse student population in support of their academic, career, and social/emotional development. Counselors will also work closely with parents, teachers, and administrators to foster a positive school culture to enhance student well-being.

Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Successful completion of a state-approved Counselor Preparation Program
  • Two (2) years of successful, full-time, school counseling experience in a public or an accredited nonpublic school

Responsibilities

  • Advises and counsels students regarding academic, career and social/emotional concerns.
  • Assesses individual, group, and program needs and plans for the appropriate use of time, materials, and resources for responsive measures.
  • Uses a variety of assessment strategies and instruments to make both short-term and long-term goals to prove student learning; monitors goal progress; supports student achievement of established goals.
  • Evaluates student progress; provides students with prompt specific evaluative feedback; maintains appropriate records.
  • Provides mediation services for student conflicts with the assistance of administration.
  • Works in conjunction with teachers and other counselors and administration to prepare students for the transition from middle school to high school.
  • Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
  • Consults with parents, teachers and administrators on specific matters (personal and/or educational).
  • Assists in referrals, in collaboration with the building administrator(s), and the psychologist, for specialized services beyond those provided by the school.
  • Works collaboratively with staff, families, and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population.
  • Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with peers, school personnel, and the community to promote and support student learning.
  • Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions.
  • Creates a supportive learning environment for all students that encourages social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
  • Participates in curriculum development, faculty committees, and student activity sponsorship, as requested.
  • Reports any pertinent information to the building administrators in case of child endangerment, neglect, or abuse.
  • Maintains licensure at the state and/or national level; assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
